Oxbow Lakes (30min boat ride from Village)
(Great Pike Water) |
August has slowly slipped away moving aside for the up coming fall. As it has been said, the smell is in the air. I know those old sayings can be a little general so let me specify. The lingering smell of damp air, the consuming labor, and the inviting camp fire are just a fews things I want you to imagine. It's really a magical time in an Alaskan Village. To explain it to the most modern of us it resembles and shares many of the characteristics of black friday. That wonderful time of year when your heart is just set on going to Walmart at 2:30 am for that free hand molded Chinese plastic, solar, radio/3inch tv/ 2
way pager/ that we ALL NEED. Yes that free chunk of garbage that will sit in your closet for so many years scientists will some day be able to tell how old the earth is by measuring the layers of dust. Ok that might be a slightly over stated. No one of the 293 people give or take in this village will be killed waiting in line at the to small mercantile. Anyway, this weekend was the start of moose season and it is so cool to see how a strong lively community comes together. One of the issue the past few weeks has been the high water. It has been raining hear for what almost seems like 2 months and I don't think I am that far off. So what does that mean for moose hunting and the subsistence way of life we participate in. If you got a boat you got a good chance on catching a moose. I have some pictures attached that seem to be lakes. Although these lakes 2months ago were dry grass oxbows with very little water. So whats that mean well, there are many places you can get to that you couldn't in a long time thats good. Although many of the visible sand bars along the river are not present. So we will se how things play out as time goes on. Take a look at these pictures this is common moose ground. I saw two moose that night as the sun edged out.
